September 15th Events

Thanks to David and Linda Hickman for making a special trip to Addison on September 15th for our education event and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Aerial Ballet – Monarch.  David created the sculpture and gave an interesting and informative talk about his evolution as an artist.

It was a beautiful day for the ribbon cutting ceremony that followed.  Mayor Joe Chow, council members Paul Walden, Ivan Hughes, Lori Ward, Marlin Willesen and Guillermo Quintanilla attended as well as City Manager Wes Pierson and Deputy City Manager Cheryl Delaney.

We also want to thank UDR, Inc. for their donation to the sculpture as well as the use of the beautiful SkyVue Room at the Fiori.  Thanks to Snooze Eatery who donated wonderful breakfast bites and coffee that were appreciated by all at our education event.  Some extras went to the team at Addison Fire Station 2.

Identity Crisis Solved!

The identity of the red sculpture located at Parkview Park off of Spectrum Drive has been found!   The Addison Arbor Foundation recently discovered that the sculpture was created by Mac Whitney, a well-known artist who resides in the Dallas area. The piece is called Marfa, named after the city in Texas.  The sculpture, which had been located at 15301 Spectrum Drive since the 1980’s, was donated to Addison Arbor by DRA Advisors LLC and Stream Realty Partners in 2015. Addison Arbor arranged to have the 3,000+ pound, 23 foot tall structure moved (via a giant crane), restored and installed at its new location in the park by the Parkview Place Townhomes off of Spectrum Drive.

Aerial Ballet _Monarch Installed

The latest sculpture commissioned by the Addison Arbor Foundation (AAF) are three 15-16 foot kinetic butterflies located at the southeast corner of Spring Valley Road and Vitruvian Way. This is the twelfth public art installation by AAF and the first kinetic art piece.  The artist, David B. Hickman, is well known for his kinetic art work which is designed to move with the wind.  A butterfly garden, also known as a pollinator patch, is located beneath the sculpture area to attract monarchs and other pollinators as they migrate through North Texas. AAF worked with master gardeners and the Town of Addison to select appropriate plants to attract the butterflies. The installation is across the street from the George Herbert Walker Bush Elementary School and at the entrance to the Vitruvian Park® development. UDR, Inc., the partial owner of Vitruvian Park®, made a contribution to the project.

Butterflies to adorn Spring Valley and Vitruvian

Three kinetic butterfly sculptures created by David B. Hickman will be placed at the southeast corner of Spring Valley and Vitruvian Way in 2Q18.  AAF will be working with the Parks Department to plant a butterfly garden beneath the site to attract Monarch and other butterflies as they migrate through the area.
